First Picnic Of The School Year

Today was the first Picnic of the school year.

As we know perfect timing, all the new and young students are use to the Little Lorikeets system.

Have been to the park quite a bit and to P.E so everyone is use walking and ready to go.

We went to our regular P.E park as it's a familiar distance for the children to start with.

We played and then had a rice ball picnic, played some more and then headed back to the school.

Overall a success 😅

Controlled Chaos

What a mess 😅
What a mess 😅

Controlled Chaos.

All the micro interactions going on..

I say something to one student and the repeat it. But the cool thing is hearing someone copying the same phrase across the room.

It's all sinking in and it really is mysterious how individuals aquire language.

2024 Year Book

The year book is finally done after many hours of searching for choice photos of the Graduates.

Each year the story based on the graduates is slightly different.

We enjoy looking at the book and reminiscing.

Playing A Minecraft Board Game

The After-school students playing a complicated game of Minecraft. What makes it funny is the instructions are written in Japanese, so they've translated it and then are playing it in English. One of our oldest students, fifth grade explaining the rules to everyone after reading it 😅

Great stuff at our 学童

220 Hours Average?

The early birds (保育園) are in before the kindergarten students are in. Play with blocks today.

All the new students are pretty much use to our schools processes. So it takes about 3 months. Right now we are sitting on 220 hrs avg the highest being 270 hrs in the school.

Over the years tracking this data you start to see patterns in regards to language development. Very interesting stuff.

First P.E Of The School Year

Today was the first P.E of the school year.

Fortunately the new students are use to going out to the park so getting to the P.E park went without issue.

Today was a short session, mainly to get the new students use to the idea of P.E and the lesson structure.

Fire Evacuation 23/05/2025

Today was the mandatory monthly evacuation practice.

Today's theme was "Fire Evacuation ".

So we covered what fire is, the signs that could happen if a fire occurs.

What will happen, the process on how to evacuate.

How a fire extinguisher is used and what this one can be used on.

Of course the younger students don't fully understand what's going on but the seniors got really into the conversation.

It also shows the importance of repetition. We've covered Fire, Earthquake, Flooding, etc many times over the years, every month but even then the students take a while to remember the terms and words.

Which also illustrates the point that when you try to learn something once a week even it is going to take a long time to become proficient.

Which is why we are so passionate about early childhood English.

Building the foundation, everyday while they are young and have time to do so, rather than trying to learn something later in life when they are busy with other obligations.

It's our mission at Little Lorikeets, where results are gained.

From the school Principal:

Mandatory is the key word.

And seeing that the students forget very quickly I see why.

Which also highlights for me the importance of regular language education if you are ever to get to proficiency.

When we first started out I got blow back from parents for suggesting to come to my school 2 times a week minimum, more the better....

But yet they would still only come once a week (even though they have the opportunity to come 5 days a week 🤔)

Anyway, one day a week kids would slowly drop off.... Why !?

Well from what we could glean from it over the years, they would drop off because they felt they couldn't keep up, and that the other kids could speak better than them.

We used to allow our Munchkins who went to regular kindergarten to attend our after school, but from being able to chat away in English easily when in Little Lorikeets to having that ability drop away pretty fast when they were immersed in Japanese kindergarten everyday.

The story could go on but to keep it short we've tried lots of ways at great expense (attrition) to finally come up with the system we have now.

After School, Great Experience

The afternoon class (for graduates only) is the extension that we always wanted.

To let our students continue building their English while they go to Elementary school.

It's hard for parents to see the outcome and benefits so we show it here.

This is what you can have if you stick at Little Lorikeets.

The students playing with the teachers, while others are doing their homework.

When everyone is here the teacher takes the Afternoon students and does some activities with them while daycare play (it's great for daycare to see and think, I want to do that too).

Before the afternoon students leave for home we will do some graded reading.

It's a wonderful environment for them to meet their friends and chat away in English.

What Is It?

At the start of the year we always play a bit of "what is it?" A sort of snap game we play..

We pretty much chant "what is it?" Over and over, it's necessary to do to get the beginners moving their lips 😅 but also as it sinks in they start using it.

With the beginners it's about fun.

With the older students we chuck in a bit of friendly competition 😁

From the school principal:

Yup saying things in fun catchy ways and the kids copy, lo and behold they're speaking English...

Children don't like being taught, they like picking things up that are interesting for them.. just like their adult counterparts right?🤔

We always mention 400 hours for the output to start happening...

Since starting in April the average hours in the school is 191.14 hours.

So getting close to halfway 😅.

Early Birds

The early birds are in

From 8:00 to 6:30 they come and leave at different times but we are here to greet them and say goodbye to them.

All day in English, what a great opportunity.

After-school Fun

The afternoon class.

Primary school students playing card games with the afternoon teacher.

While the daycare students play with blocks.

It's a great experience for the daycare to see and get use to what they will eventually be in in a few years time.

Seeing the older students continue with the graded reading.

It all sinks in subconsciously preparing them.

Just like our Munchkin program does for the very beginning of school life.

Education Vs development?

The students playing with the 保育士 and building up their communication skills.

During the sticker book time they are asked questions like, how do you spell Monday, or when is your birthday.

Practicing a bit of site reading and thinking skills.

After Lunch clean up yr 4 and 5 will practice their graded reading.

Little Lorikeets is about verbal output and communication skills. So we don't spend much time on writing skills. That is a skill they will pick up from primary school onwards anyway (3rd grade onwards) so it gives them something to look forward to instead of be bored with when it comes.

12 yrs of experience and following the 保育所保育指針 as a guide we have developed a system that works.

Little Lorikeets where results are gained.

From the school principal:

It's difficult to balance development and education.

According to the 保育所保育指針 we over the different age groups slowly introduce them to symbols, numbers, signs etc. Foster an interest in others and in nature etc and the other aspects that the guidelines propose.

But it's not about forcing it all on to the students which is what traditional "Education" is about it is about letting them come to an understanding themselves via educing it.

But yet the students in an "International" have an expectation put on them from the parents and teachers expect hours of writing practice etc. All for perceived add value. At regular daycare heck even Kindergarten those expectations are not put on the students.

We at Little Lorikeets find that the ideas from the 保育所保育指針 are more appropriate to developing individuals in to well rounded individuals.

Spending hours a week, silently writing lines and lines of letters and sentences takes away from output and the ability to develop verbal communication skills and interpersonal abilities.

At Little Lorikeets we do focus on graded reading but at a pace that is in line with each individual students level and ability.

This is the key difference
