赤ちゃんだって英語がわかる
英語のプリスクールをやりたいという思いがあって、当スクールをスタートさせたのですが、最初から急速な変化が見られたわけではありません。でも、この数年で、様々な変化が見られるスピードが上がってきたように思います。その理由として、以下のようなことが考えられます。
1. 評判を得るようになって数年が 経過している。
2. スクールの子ども達や、スクールに通っているバイリンガルの私の子ども達を見て頂いているおかげか、私がいつも言っていることが信じてもらえるようになってきた。
3. 当スクールで早い段階から言語教育を始めた子ども達が急激に増えて、その結果、英語を話す子どもの数も飛躍的に増えてきた。そしてこのような結果に気付いてもらえるようになってきた。
言語を学ぶなら、出来るだけ早く始めることが大切だと常に思っていますが、25歳の時に日本語を学び始めた自分自身の経験からもそう感じます。大人になってから言語を学んだため、私のアクセントはひどいものですし、全てを理解することはできません。英語と同じように話したり、説明したりすることはできないのです。ここで強調できることは、何歳であっても新しい言語を学ぶことは可能で流暢になることもできますが、本当の意味での流暢さを身に付けるためには、もっと早くから始める必要があるということです。
全て理解できる、コミュニケーションをとることができる、説明することができる、ということだけを言いたいのではありません。発音、そして文化やジョークなども理解すること、を含みます。英語に対して、流暢で理解もできている日本人も多く見てきましたが、アクセントや発音を上達させたいと思っていたり、文化やジョークまでは理解できないという人が多いです。でも、そういう人達は努力されているし、私自身も、自分の日本語のアクセントはひどく、文化的なニュアンスやジョーク全てを理解しているとは言えないので、彼らを尊敬しています。
しかし、赤ちゃんの頃から始めた子ども達は英語を吸収するのがとても速いということが分かっています。今日のベビーのクラスでも、月齢の進んだ赤ちゃん達は、私達講師の言うことに反応して行動しています。それは、私達が言うことを理解しているということであり、理解力があるということです。 こういう事実を目にすることができて嬉しいです。「赤ちゃんから英語を始めるなんて早い」と思われているお父さん方のことをよく耳にしていたからです。明らかに、それは間違いであり、また、「日本語もまだ確立されていないのに英語なんて、負担が多すぎる」 といった考えも間違っています。それは、そういった子ども達は、一日中日本語を話し話される環境に毎日いてるからです。
母国語(この場合、日本語)が定着する前に英語を聞いたり少しでも話したりしていると、母国語が既に身に付いた子ども達よりも、理解度も発音も良いということが分かっています。母国語が定着してから英語を始めた子ども達にも、もちろんチャンスはあります。でも、ネイティブのように発音できるバイリンガルになりたいと思うのであれば、Little Lorikeets のような、英語オンリーの環境でたくさん過ごす必要があります。
赤ちゃんから始めた子ども達に関してもう一つ気付いた点は、お母さんから離れて一人でプリスクールに来ることになった時、これまで英語の経験がなく入会した子ども達と比べて、反応が良く、ストレスも少ない、という点です。私も初めて日本へ来て日本語を学んだ時に同じような経験をしたので、子ども達の状況はわかります。でも、3歳の子どもとは違い、私はもう大人でしたから、何が起こっているのか状況を把握できていました。
ですから、ここLittle Lorikeetsでは、子ども達に英語オンリーの環境に溶け込んでもらえるようベストを尽くしています。ですが、「なぜ日本語を話すといけないのか」、「一体何が起こっているのか」子ども達が分かっていない時もあります。可哀想かもしれませんが、日本語禁止を徹底して、子ども達が英語オンリーの環境に速くかつ自然に慣れられるようにしています。
赤ちゃんから英語を始めると、英語の環境に慣れるのも英語の音や文章を聞き取るのも、とても速くなります。マンチキンクラスの子ども達の中には、一文全てを戸惑うことなく繰り返すことができている子もいます。一方で、最近始めた子ども達は、同じ文章でもパターンに慣れるまではまずいくつかに分けないといけません。
Little Lorikeets では、赤ちゃんから始められる機会をたくさん提供しています。火曜日、金曜日、土曜日にベビーのクラス(Baby Land)があります。赤ちゃんの頃を過ぎてしまった場合でも、Happy Toddler クラスがあります。

Babies know English too
We started out wanting to make a Preschool from the start and it has been a slow path but over the last few years the speed has picked up there is a few reasons I suspect:
1. We have a few years of reputation
2. People believe what I say because they are seeing results from children within the school and also from my own children, who are all bilingual and also attend the school.
3. The amount of children within the school who have started earlier in their language education has drastically increased and as a result, the amount of English speaking children has exponentially increased and people have noticed that.
I have always thought that starting as young as possible is the most important step for learning languages and I know this personally as I started learning Japanese when I was 25yrs of age. Learning from a late age has caused my accent to be terrible, I don't understand everything and can't talk about things or explain things the way I can in English. This highlights that starting at any time you can learn a new language and be proficient but it also highlights that for true fluency you need to start much younger.
It is not just about understanding everything and being able to communicate and explain everything, it also includes pronunciation, understanding cultural things, jokes etc. I have met a lot of Japanese who are fluent in their understanding but have been found wanting in their accents/ pronunciation or not being able to understand cultural things or jokes. Of course I respect those people because they are trying for I know myself that My accent is terrible and I know I don't understand every cultural nuance or joke myself.
I have noticed though, that the children who have started as babies seem to grasp English so much faster, even today in our baby classes the older babies were doing the actions to what we were saying which means they understand what we were saying so comprehension was there. I am glad to see this because I've had discussions with parents who have said "Oh the father thinks that it is too early for the baby to learn English" , obviously that is a mistake as well as parents who say " oh their Japanese isn't even developed yet so learning English will be too much for the child", again a mistake especially since those kids are in an environment where they speak and get spoken to in Japanese all day every day??
I have found that if the child hears English and speaks a bit of English before their majority language (Japanese) becomes well defined, those children have better understanding and better pronunciation than children who start after the majority language (Japanese) is already installed. Children who start after the majority language is developed still have a chance of course but if they want to become bilinguals with a native pronunciation they have to spend a lot more time in an English only environment like the one that Little Lorikeets has.
Another point that I have noticed is that the children who have started since they were babies, when it comes to separating from the mother and joining our Preschool, have a far better reaction and less stress than children that have no English experience and join our school from outside. I can understand the child's situation as I had that when I first came to Japan and had to learn Japanese, but unlike a three year old child I can understand what's happening. So we try our best to integrate the child into the “all English” environment, but sometimes the child cannot understand why or what is happening. This is a pity, but in Little Lorikeets we have a strict no Japanese policy so the child adapts fast usually to the English only environment.
Starting learning English as a baby gets the child use to the English environment, and they pick up the sounds and sentences of English so much faster. There are munchkin class kids now who can repeat whole sentences without any hesitation, whereas the children who have started recently have to have the same sentences broken up into smaller parts at first until they get use to the pattern.
At Little Lorikeets we have plenty of opportunity to start as babies with classes on Tuesday and Friday and Saturdays, but even if you slightly missed starting English then there is still the Happy Toddler classes that we have too.
