I was talking to some mums of the school at Coffee Time and they were saying that their kids enjoyed the classes but didn't understand everything thing that is said because it's in English,  to which i said good. If they understood everything that was said they wouldn't have to come for English lessons on another note if they understood everything because it was all explained in Japanese they wouldn't necessarily be learning a language that they can use.

If you get everything served up for you, you will never learn.  You  learn from making mistakes and from wanting to know the unknown.

I personally know this from my Japanese,  I walk into a store with no English help at all and all I can do is listen and think.  Through this process I remember what they say (which is a live language) and can start to use it.

It's not about learning English to perfection and being able to use it perfectly, that's impossible. But some Japanese parents seem to expect that. Learning any language is an experience,  it's slow and personal depending on the child's abilities.

Learning how to ask questions and enquire about things in English is important,  from this children can start learning English by themselves once they have a foundation.

Next is pronunciation, getting a nice accent is important.  So saying lots of English out loud and being corrected by a native speaker is of utmost importance.  Especially before they start primary school,  once they have entered  school they start learning katakana, and all the English that is written in katakana which leads to the notorious Japanese-English accents.

And unfortunately the child's mind is getting less flexible by then, so correcting the wrong pronunciation is soo much harder.

Next is reading, being able to read English words and sentences helps the children gain  structure  to base their learning on, graduated reading is an important style that we incorporate into our school as well as phonics a word recognition.

Of course all of this is of no use unless the child is interested, so making English fun and approachable is also important.

The main point that I want to make about this is that the children and parents shouldn’t worry about making mistakes and this is how we teach at Little Lorikeets. Having to be right all the time is stressful and unnecessary and the English learning community in Japan have to come to terms with that.
